The tough landing
30°C, the sound of waves, I feel the sand between my toes. I start opening my eyes. The sun is shining in my face. Here and there, I see dolphins jumping across the sea. No human being is around. It is just the beach and me. I can totally fall back, no mobile phone, no technique. I look around and cannot see anything made from human, no cars, no houses, not even any waste at the beach. Seriously, how did I get here?
I try to remember. The last thing I know: I was close Paraty, Brazil, at the beach and I decided to swim a bit. Swimming out into the sea. Why am I now here? I watch my body, no wounds. I am wearing swimming cloths. The sun burned my skin a bit. Maybe I should explore where I am. Maybe I find someone who can help me to come back.
Big waves to cross
All I see are the forest, the sea and the beach behind the beach. I decide to follow the beach. Here are sometimes big rocks blocking the simple way. They go deep into the island. I have to cross them and I remember how I was swimming. Cross those big waves was awesome, i loved it. Each one was a new challenge. I could not stop, taking the next wave as well. I could not stop swimming.
This also reminds me of work, before I decided to take a time out. I was managing several projects at once, each like a huge wave, like mountains to climb. I was good at it. The customers liked my spirit and my hands on mentality. They loved, the way I push tasks forward until they are completed. I always gave 120%. This is why I received more and more projects, important and challenging tasks. I loved what I did.
Decisions to take
At the beach, I reached a challenge now. Rocks in the height of about 5m are in front of me. It reaches far into the forest. I can decide, do I try to bypass it through the forest or the sea or should I climb up, without safeguarding. I could find a street, following the rocks through the forest. On the other hand, from upside I can see more. The waves in the sea could crash me against the sharp rocks, by the way, I am not sure whether I should swim already. But on the top, maybe I find civilization. I should climb up and I started.
Generally this reminds me of the situation when I saw huge waves coming to me. I did not know what comes next, just like when I got a new project and I did not know, what exactly this means. Will all project members be on the same side? Will the project budget be sufficient? What, if project stakeholders will be influenced negatively? How will they react? What, if the wave suddenly breaks, because there are unexpected shallows? Or What if a rock breaks under my hands or feet and I cannot balance it?
I am very carefully, trying each step carefully before balancing my full weight on it. Whenever there seems to be a lack of security, I tried another way. Suddenly I nearly fell down after half distance. In the same moment, I remembered what happened, when I was swimming. There was a big wave breaking directly in front of me. It pulled me down, below sea and I lost my awareness. The sea must have brought me to this place.
Do not give up
Climbing further, I try to imagine, what this might teach me for living life. In the job, I had a comparable situation. My last project was critically against some stakeholders. Maybe I was too hard trying, to fit the shareholders needs, and I forgot about some stakeholders. Or I possibly should have looked more for their needs. Maybe If I did, they cooperated instead of working against me. It was like now, when I was sometimes falling some steps down on these rocks. I did not notice this by then, at work. Now I take care of each step, caring about, if stones might hang a little loose. This costs time, but might save my life. I am just happy that I do not have to climb in the burning sun.
When I reached the top, at first the sun was blending me. Then I saw, these rocks going for about 10 to 15 meters along the sea, but what comes afterwards? I cannot yet see any other human, no civilization not even on one of the islands around here. I heard about boat trips in Paraty, maybe I will see any boat, but I did not. I decided to walk further, carefully, to see what is behind. My hands and feet are already hurting and a bit blood comes out. Again, I am very carefully moving, noticing my environment in detail, just like I want to take more care about the shareholders in my job from now on.
Reaching the ending, I finally see people lying at the beach. I shouted loud. They saw me. Finally, what a good feeling. I found some people after all these efforts. That was worth it. The people are nice and they took me back to the harbor of Paraty.
Situations like this could happen in life every day. I will take care, whom I will influence, now even more. Additionally will I work on focusing on each single stakeholder even more. But the most important is: I will take care of myself. The health is important and at least as priceless as time.
If you sometimes feel like giving up, living life takes too much energy from you, when you give up or not consider your environment, the sea of life could either pull you down or set your direction. Find a balanced way to live. If a wave wants to pull you down, you still need enough energy to swim up again. Live smart and be prepared. Find times to rest and to do sports. Take the chance to be the captain of your life. Do not let the waves bring you away from your path. Living a balanced way supports you on this. You will have sufficient energy to find your way or quickly back on your way. Also: Whatever happens in life, you can learn from it.
